Stone frieze, Chichén Itzá

We ended up in Mérida almost by chance, as it’s one of the closest places you can fly to from Havana. This was fortuitous, as it’s a really nice city and near lots of interesting stuff.

Tacos

We almost lived on tacos for our first two weeks in Mexico. A few places of note where we went:

  • Apoala - high end and very tasty
  • Taqueria Salas in the Bazar de Artesanías García Rejón
  • La Lupiuta inside Mercado Municipal. This features in the episode of Salt Fat Acid Heat with the salsa expert. We especially liked the cochinita pibil.
  • Malahat - speakeasy cocktail joint in the car park behind Apoala
  • Mercado 60 - a hipster food court kinda thing. We had a Brazilian asado platter, which was pretty good, and bought some nice jarred salsas

The instructions we were given for Taqueria Salas were:

There is a bazar in Merida located east of Calle 60, South of Calle 65, and West of Calle 58.

In the bazar is a taqueria called “Chilaqueria” and another called “El Amigo Ramiez”. The place with the most amazing tacos is either the Chilaqueria or it’s in between Chillaqueria and El Amigo Ramirez.

If there is a place in between, that’s the place.

Taqueria Salas was indeed ‘the place in between’. Thanks, Jon Barry!
